Three things: coverage, fabric weight and how it fastens. Baking means flour, butter and leaning against counters, so a full-length bib or pinafore beats a short waist apron. Cotton around 250 g/m² resists staining and survives hot washes. Cross-back or drawstring straps keep weight off your neck when you are on your feet for hours.

Almost all of them. Pockets are set at hip height, cut deep enough for a phone, thermometer or recipe card, and bar-tacked at the corners so they do not tear away when loaded.

Cross-back straps spread the weight over both shoulders and never slide off or press on your neck, which matters over a long bake. Waist-tie aprons are faster to put on and easier to share between people of different sizes. If you cook daily, choose cross-back; if the apron is for occasional use or a gift, waist ties are more forgiving on fit.

Shake off dry flour before it gets wet. For grease, rub a little dish soap into the mark, leave it 10 minutes, then machine wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C. Air dry rather than tumble dry — heat sets any stain you missed. Avoid bleach on coloured and printed cotton.
