Buying one apron for yourself is easy. Buying fifteen for a team is a different exercise, and most of the mistakes are made before the order is placed. Here is the checklist we go through with venues.
1. Count shifts, not people
The most common error is ordering one apron per employee. Aprons get dirty mid-shift, and laundry takes a day. A working rule is two per person, or one and a half if you launder daily. For a team of eight, order twelve to sixteen.
2. Two sizes usually cover everyone
With crossback straps and long ties, most adult bodies fit into two sizes. Order a rough split — often 60% smaller, 40% larger — rather than measuring each person. Keep a couple of spares in the larger size: they are more forgiving if someone falls between.
3. Choose colour for your worst spill, not your best photo
Espresso, chocolate, beetroot, red wine — think about what your venue actually spills. Dark brown and black hide almost everything. Deep green and burgundy sit in the middle. Light colours photograph beautifully and look tired by 3pm.
A practical compromise some venues use: dark aprons for kitchen and bar, lighter ones for front-of-house where the apron is part of the look and gets changed more often.
4. Ask how it launders before you ask how it looks
A uniform apron will be washed several times a week for years. Two things matter: fabric weight (light cotton wears out fast) and whether the colour holds at 40°C. If you use a commercial laundry, tell your supplier — industrial cycles are harsher than domestic ones.
5. Decide about branding early
Embroidery or print changes lead time and often the minimum order. If you want your logo on the apron, raise it in the first conversation rather than after you have chosen a model — not every fabric and placement works for every logo.
6. Order one sample first
Always. Have the person who wears it longest work a full shift in it. Fit problems, pocket position and how the fabric feels after four hours near a grill are things no product photograph can tell you.
7. Plan for replacements
Aprons get lost, burned and stained beyond saving. Ask whether the model will still be available in six months, and keep a note of exactly what you ordered — model, colour, size split — so a repeat order takes five minutes instead of an afternoon.
